A Stake in the Future of Reaseheath

The business and events management team recently held their first ever stakeholder event, ‘The BEST Awards’, celebrating our links with local businesses.

Local business partners and associates were invited to the event held at Reaseheath Hall as a thank you for supporting the department over the last year (many local businesses provide students with work experience, come to college as guest speakers and offer opportunities for trips and visits for students). The event was a great chance for guests to network with other industry professionals along with an excellent opportunity to learn more about future plans and how they could continue to support us.

The BEST Awards ceremony was planned and managed by the students of Year 1 Foundation Degree in Rural Events Management, and they were supported by volunteers from BTEC Level 3 Business and Events courses.

The evening’s agenda, compered by Dave Kynaston, included speakers from the College and partner organisations, a presentation of a number of awards, as well as entertainment from singer/songwriter Matthew Sellors. It was rounded off with a raffle to raise money for this year’s RAG charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.

Guests thoroughly enjoyed the event and gave the organisers some excellent feedback. One participant said “a very interesting evening, very smoothly organised with great food and ambient atmosphere.”

Hazel Shimmin, Business and Events Management Curriculum Area Manager, thanked all the attendees for their involvement with the College and presented the awards.

Award winners included:

Best Visit Award – Nicola Carter, McDonalds (Whitchurch Franchise)

Awarded to the company who provided us with the best and most informative visit for our students.

McDonalds have hosted a number of visits for us this year and helped students to see first-hand how recruitment processes work in large organisations.

Best Business Placement – Kirsty Croft, Tiers & Tiaras

Awarded to the company who gave our students the best overall placement and offered further opportunities.

Kirsty is an inspirational young business woman who has been a great role model for 3 of our students through work placements over the last 2 years. She has continued to employ students outside of work placement so they get a variety of business experience.

Best Events Placement – Jenny Peake, Douglas Macmillian Hospice

Awarded to the company who offered the best placement to our events students. Our work placement student said “they made me feel so much a part of the team”.  She felt that the experience she gained during the placement was invaluable and that the work they do is so important to everyone in the local area.

Best Contribution to the Community – Dave James, Cheshire Rangers

Awarded to the company who has contributed the most to the local community, making an influential difference.

Two of our students enjoyed placements at Cheshire Rangers, they were impressed with the difference they could make.

Best Contribution to the Business and Events Department – Howard Blythe, Bolesworth International Show

This award is given to the company who has provided the business and events department with continuous support and contributed to the student’s development.

Howard is working to prepare our students to volunteer at the prestigious Bolesworth International Show in June. Students will learn how such a large event is planned and organised.

 

Kate Sherwin, one of the degree students involved in organising the event said: “this was a great opportunity to put everything we have learnt on the course into practice by organising a real event for our business contacts. It was an enjoyable and challenging experience, and the whole team worked well together.”

All in all, the event was considered a great success, and we hope that it will become a regular feature in our events schedule for years to come.
