Mikey’s building a bright future in the construction industry!

Mikey Roberts started his journey with the Reaseheath construction department back in 2009 whilst he was still a student at Ruskin High School. Initially enrolling on to our Key Stage 4 construction programme, Mikey spent one day a week at Reaseheath learning the basics of bricklaying and joinery.

On completing his studies at school and his Key Stage 4 award in construction in 2011, Mikey decided to continue his bricklaying training with Reaseheath. He went on to achieve Levels 1, 2 and 3 in bricklaying with us and was also awarded ‘best overall construction student’ in his final year.

After completing his training in 2014, Mikey became self-employed and began working at Reaseheath as part of the team of bricklayers constructing some of the college’s new building developments. He combined full time work with studying for a Higher National Certificate in Construction to further develop his management skills.

It was whilst bricklaying at Reaseheath that Mikey was noticed by contractor, Pochin. Impressed by his work ethic, Pochin proceeded to offer Mikey a position as an Assistant Site Manager, a post that he still holds as he finishes his degree level study.

Mikey commented: “I owe everything to the Construction Department, I realise now that everything that they were asking me to do was to make me ready for the world of work. I am a lot better for it now as I can see why the tutors kept emphasising the things I needed to do, I would recommend the Construction department and Reaseheath to anyone, the workshops are brilliant.”

Level 2 joiners were recently asked to help with some maintenance at Tarporley CE Primary School. They were asked to help with the maintenance of two doors, the door frames and a sandstone building that is used in the school ground.

The construction students were delighted to meet with Peter Howell, the site maintenance manager to get a view of the project and take some measurements, the students then created a materials list and a quote.

A price was agreed for the materials and they have been delivered to college this week. The bench joiners have now produced a working drawing so that they can manufacture the doors and frames. Once the risk assessment and method statement are complete the site joiners will take them to the school to complete the work.

Throughout the project our students have conducted themselves in a very professional manner and they were made to feel very welcome by the school.

Reaseheath College Employer Mentor, Leonard Brothers Vet Centre Ltd, recently enquired whether the construction department could help with some plastering at their vet practice. Enthusiastic to support local businesses, students were excited to investigate the job.

A group of out Level 1 and  Level 2 plasterers went to visit the client and see what was involved, they then put a quote together for the job and they emailed them – they got the job!

So the day arrived we went to the vets (which was still open while the work was to be carried out). The student plasterers ensured everywhere was covered up and completed the job to a very good standard.

Construction partnership builds students’ future

Proving that builders are a hardy bunch here’s Level 2 Diploma in Joinery student Jack Connor enjoying work experience with site manager Darren Turner on a new social housing estate in Crewe. Despite the wintry weather, Jack says that spending 100 hours on site has been brilliant.

The site is being developed by Wulvern in partnership with contractors MCI Developments. And in an amazingly generous move, both companies are helping us to encourage new talent into the construction industry by paying for all our construction students to gain their health and safety and Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) accreditations, which are essential for site work.

Jack, 17, a former Malbank School pupil who wants to be a site joiner, has been busy working on roofs and stud wall partitions. He says: “I’m loving the experience and it’ll look great on my CV”.

Darren says: “This is the first time we’ve had a college student on site and it’s worked really well. It’s important that we support the next generation coming into the industry and having Jack as part of the team has been helpful for MCI Developments too.”

Programme Leader for Construction, Andy Gould, adds: “The department was delighted at this very generous offer from these two industry partners. It shows a concerted effort by us all to ensure the best possible future for the next generation of skilled workers. The industry is crying out for bricklayers, joiners and plasterers, along with other core trades.”

Two more construction students will be doing work experience on Wulvern/MCI Development sites in the near future.
