Our Ladies Football Academy  team had their first competitive football match of the season on Wednesday (5th October) against a mixed team from Coleg Menai-Bangor and Coleg Llandrillo. The Reaseheath team settled into the game with all players looking comfortable on the ball and willing to play the game in the right manner as they have been coached over the past 4 weeks. The Reaseheath team were unlucky in the first half with Maisy Millerchip hitting both left and right posts and Alexandra Moon dominating the midfield battle. Both sides had created chances in the first half but with Reaseheath having the clearer cut, half time soon arrived 0-0.

The second half started and after 5 minutes Coleg Menai-Bangor had a scuffed shot, which hit Reaseheath’s left hand post and cross the line, 0-1. The home side didn’t let their heads drop and they continued to play some very attractive football with Liv Briscoe coming close to scoring off of the right hand side with a powerful strike from distance, only to be matched by a fantastic fingertip save over the crossbar from the opposition’s goalkeeper. With 5 minutes to go Reaseheath were committing more players forward looking for an equaliser, both Lauren Ainley and Sophie Naginigton applying pressure forward from both the fullback positions leaving space in behind our own defensive line. Elle Bayley was a defensive rock in these moments but there was only so much Reaseheath could commit before conceding again and with minutes to go Coleg Menai-Bangor hit Reaseheath on the counter attack and scored the second, 0-2.

Overall Reaseheath were hard done by on the score board, but it’s goals that win games. Performance wise, the ladies played excellently and there’s a lot of positives to take forward. All players thoroughly enjoyed the first game of the season even if it was loss, and we’re very pleased that the Academy numbers have increased dramatically since the start of term! Also, a big thank you must be said to Sarah Ruff who has brought in players from other courses across the college, who will supplement the squad on future match days!
